UK labour market shows promising signs

The Office for National Statistics – (ONS) reported UK employment data on 21st January 2020.

Job growth strongest for a year

The number of people in employment rose by 208,000 to 32.90 million in period September to October – the biggest increase since the three months to January 2019.

Unemployment total falls

People out of work dropped by 7,000 to 1.31 million in the three months to November, according to the latest official figures – unemployment remained at 3.8%

Earnings growth slows

Pay, excluding bonuses, rose 3.4% annually, a slowdown from the previous figure of 3.5%, and the slowest rate since the three months to April 2019.

Including bonuses, earnings rose by an annual rate of 3.2%, unchanged from the previous reading.
