Election

Election or referendum by proxy. Will December election break Brexit deadlock?

Finally the UK parliament makes a positive move to back Boris Johnson’s call for a December election.

Will it deliver an opportunity to break the Brexit deadlock or will it deliver yet more uncertainty?

Referendum by proxy?

My worry is that the UK public will see this as a second referendum. But at least the voter will be better informed this time round – won’t they?

‘Flextension’

On Monday, the EU agreed to postpone Brexit day until 31st January 2020 to give the UK PM time to persuade members of Parliament to ratify the new deal he agreed with the EU on 17th October 2019. The EU have allowed this ‘flextension’ as the UK can leave anytime between now and the 31st January 2020.

Me, my, I – or nation first?

After months of pathetic personal ‘want’ and ‘my party’ first politics, members of parliament may have finally put the nation first! And not before time.

Submit Bill to parliament

Boris Johnson is expected to submit a bill to Parliament on Tuesday 29th October that calls for a 12th December election that would only need a simple majority. This will be the fourth attempt.

Election

The exact date remains contentious, with Labour, the Scottish National Party and the Liberal Democrats all manouvering for a different date? No surprise there then really.

Liberal Democrats

The Liberal Democrats want to reverse the Brexit decision and remain a EU member thus reversing and ignoring the referendum vote.

SNP

The SNP appear to have their own agenda and want to remain part of the EU and will again push for a second referendum for Scotland as they didn’t like the outcome of the first!

DUP

Unhappy with the newly negotiated Brexit deal.

Labour

Corbyn’s Labour party – I have no real idea what he/they now represent. Chaos!

Election or Referendum by proxy

It’s likely many will see this as a second referendum vote as the Brexit issue will no doubt dominate the debate.

At least for now though this is a positive step in the right direction and will hopefully resolve parliament’s inability to carryout the wishes of the people!

I sincerely hope this election delivers a clear majority result.

No hung parliament please!
